Beloved by mixologists, Dubonnet Rouge is a staple at any high-class cocktail bar. It traces its roots all the way back to 1846, when Parisian chemist and wine merchant Joseph Dubonnet developed it in order to please the palates of French soldiers battling malaria.
The expressions from this brand were very good and value priced across the board, but the reposado was especially memorable. Pale straw color, pleasant mix of vanilla, floral and faint pear fragrances. The flavor is sweet, with a lightly smoky finish with some vanilla tones, reminiscent of lighter peated whiskey. Medium body, smooth feel.
Ole Smoky have impressed us at Fine Drams for their excellent range of moonshines. Moonshine, or white whiskey, is likely the form that much of America’s early spirits took, being produced illegally by farmers as a means of using surplus crop.
Look for a burnished gold hue and fresh apple aroma. The rounded palate beautifully mixes cinnamon spice, mild smoke and an herbaceous roots-and-bark complexity that suggests sarsaparilla.
