The Yuzu citrus fruit has been growing in Japan for more than 1.000 years. Because of its dry pulp and many large seeds the juice can only be extracted in a complicated – i.e., expensive – process from pulp and rind. Fortunately, just a few drops are already enough for a unique and intense flavor.
Picturesque and enchanting landscapes of the Upper Ebro give us these grapes, from which the winemaker from the Spanish winery El Coto de Rioja conjures up this red wine with refinement and experience.

Kisi grape were selected from our old vineyards, and fermented for six months in the traditional clay vessel - Ovevri buried in the ground in our wine cellar. After the primary fermentation the wine is pressed and transferred to the French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and maturation. Aromas of dried peach, pines and white flowers, The palate is full, with flavors of black tea and pears supported by firm tannins, followed by a long lingering finish.
A very fresh and decidedly peppery nose features pretty notes of red berries and an elegant floral nuance. There is fine intensity and volume to the well-detailed middle weight flavors that deliver very good length on the saline-inflected finish. Good stuff that could be enjoyed young or aged for a few years to good effect.

Boxler is widely considered one of the top producers in Alsace, although this small, meticulously run estate is often overshadowed by its larger, more famous neighbors (Trimbach, Humbrecht etc.). But that suits current winemaker/proprietor Jean Boxler just fine.
