Alain Graillot stumbled upon these vineyards and the Thalvin winery while bicycling in the Zenata region of Morocco between Casablanca and Rabat. It is a beautiful area with cool winds blowing off the Atlantic and no polluting industries. The Thalvin winery has been around since the 1920s and after some discussion, a deal was reached and Thalvin provided Graillot with parcels of Syrah vines to produce Syrocco.
A wine that has acquired an increasingly well-defined identity over the years and that in 2019, also on the strength of a spectacular harvest and the confirmation of the addition of Cabernet Franc in the blend, undoubtedly marks its territorial connotation. It is the purest expression of the Val di Cornia terroir and its specific agronomic identity, which brings two different micro-terroirs into the glass: calcareous soils, rich in iron, sodium and magnesium on the one hand, and micro-elements, combined with the deep clay layer, on the other.
In a world of fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon, this brand is not shy of herbal influences. In this bottling, aromas of oregano, marjoram, cracked pepper and dried berries work well on the nose, while the palate's chalky tannins frame flavors of charred berry, bay leaf and more garden herbs.
The 2018 Pierres Dorees has a dark garnet color with an intense nose of black fruits, blueberry, and cherries. There is a fullness on the palate with flavors of currant and mocha followed by a fresh finish.
Light, lifted, perfumed, cherries, blueberries, baking spice, with a touch of sweet tobacco. The body is lengthy and weighty with a juicy ripeness, medium tannins, and a well-rounded chewy finish. You could lay this down for up to 10 years or enjoy yesterday. Too good to pass up!
Exquisite balance of ripe fruit and oak here, melding together nicely on the full-bodied palate with well-placed tannins that create a pleasant, velvety and fruity carpet that glides gently through the long finish. So well constructed and will be utterly delicious for a long while yet.
