The 2021 Papillon fills the glass with an unmistakable dark crimson, a flash of neon purple and a ruby rim. Tears move glacially and the wine opens with aromatics of boysenberry jam, violets, chocolate covered blueberry and hints of Cara Cara rind, graphite and brioche.
On the nose, the wine leaps from the glass with ripe blackberry, cassis, black cherry, and red plum, with a lovely herbaceous undertone. The palate expresses juicy red and black fruits with hints of black tea, damp earth, vanilla bean, lavender, and just a touch of flint.
Individual parcels of Pinot Noir are hand harvested and destemmed for fermentation in tank. Fermentation by indigenous yeasts from our organically farmed vineyard drive the fermentation.
The 2019 Gandona is simply magnificent. A wine of soaring intensity and structure the 2019 marries power richness and depth. Inky dark fruit chocolate black cherry leather and torrefaction all race across the palate. There is plenty of the opulence readers have come to expect here but with an extra kick of vibrancy that adds a feeling of energy the earlier vintages did not have. Notes of leather, toasted oak and vanilla carry into the palate, along with flavors of stone fruit and port that give way to creamy crème brulee and honey with nutty marzipan. The finish features slight tannins and notes of black tea, apricot and smoke.
