Inky bright-rimmed ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet displays sexy black and blue fruit liqueur scents complicated by suggestions of potpourri vanilla and incense. Stains the palate with sweet deeply concentrated boysenberry cherry cola and fruitcake flavors; a sexy violet pastille nuance emerges with aeration. Rich but also impressively balanced with velvety tannins building slowly on a strikingly long penetrating finish.
Made from Listán Negro sourced from the vineyards of Pedro Umpiérrez and Ascensión Robayna. Vines in excess of 100 years old. Planted in deep, black volcanic sands (up to 3m deep) over clay subsoils. Hand harvested, 90% whole cluster, natural yeast fermentation in amphorae and small fermentation bins. 6 months in neutral 500L French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
This has a rather shy nose that eventually reveals whiffs of botanical herb, cedar and underbrush. Racy and rather lean, the focused palate shows dried cherry, coffee bean and clove alongside bright acidity. Close-grained tannins leave a drying finish.
