These wines are some of the best "hidden gems". Small production wines, estate grown, and EU certified Sustainable, Certified Vegan and Certified "low carbon footprint" in Italy. The wines are bottled in liters as a nod to the tradition of casual "country wines" poured in Italy at parties, holidays, and family gatherings. Fruity, lively, and pure, they are wines to celebrate with--even if it's only on a Tuesday night with pepperoni pizza.
Clos de la Vieille Eglise, the tiny property estate of Jean-Louis and Benoît Trocard, has an opulent bouquet with layers of ripe cassis and blueberry fruit, just showing a little more alcohol than its Pomerol peers. The palate is ripe and generous on the entry. I was expecting it to spill over into something overdone... but no. It is actually very elegant and harmonious with great depth and very fine persistence.
The third of seven expressions in this limited series from the venerable Midleton distillery. Kylebeg Wood – or An Coill Beag, as it is in Irish – refers to ‘the little wood,’ a carefully managed forest that has stood on the Ballykilcavan Estate since the 17th century.
The Rye Project is a series of Rye expressions from Wolves anchored by a very low-content (51%) rye whiskey, distilled in Indiana, and aged for 6 years in new American oak.
The base Cabernet from this terrific estate is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, which checks in as 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It has beautiful notes of crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco, and ground herbs as well as a dense, rich, concentrated style on the palate. This terrific Cabernet is going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and cruise for upwards of 15 years (or more) in cool cellars.
